What is an air waybill (AWB)?

Definition, structure and specifics of the AWB - from chargeable weight to automated air freight invoice auditing

The air waybill (AWB) is the standardised freight document of air cargo. Its structure follows IATA specifications, which makes it more uniform worldwide than the documents of any other transport mode. The AWB confirms takeover of the shipment, documents the contract of carriage and carries the billing basis - but it is not a document of title: unlike the bill of lading, the AWB transfers no right to the goods; release is to the named consignee.

Structure and core fields

An AWB contains, in standardised fields:

  • Parties: shipper, consignee, issuing agent (forwarder),
  • Route: airports of departure and destination (IATA codes), routing via intermediate stops if any,
  • Shipment: number of pieces, gross weight, chargeable weight, nature of goods,
  • Billing: rate class, rate/charge, surcharges and fees (e.g. fuel and security surcharge, handling), payment terms (prepaid/collect).

Unlike CMR or B/L, the AWB thus carries the billing logic inside the document: whoever audits air freight invoices finds the reference values in the waybill itself.

Chargeable weight: the most frequent source of differences

Air freight is billed on the higher of two values: the actual gross weight and the volumetric weight (standard conversion 6,000 cm³ per kg, i.e. 1 m³ ≈ 167 kg). In practice, discrepancies arise when airline, forwarder and shipper calculate with different dimensions or rounding - or when the house AWB carries different values than the master AWB.
